Saturday and/or Sunday, May 4 & 5, 10 am: Field Trip, Carter Caves State Park, Carter County, Kentucky  (Our Society's event)

Last year’s hike leaders were so fascinated with Carter Caves that they want to do it again! I hope you can join us for our weekend trip to Carter Caves. Our guides, Judy and Ray Komorowski, will lead us to some of the park’s beautiful places to see the amazing spring wildflowers. Please join us for one or both days. More details for this event will be posted in the next newsletter.

Accommodations: There is a block of rooms reserved at the lodge for those who would like a room for Friday and/or Saturday. Be sure to RSVP to Christine Hadley at christinehadley@earthlink.net or 513-850-9585 so we have the correct number of rooms.

  

**May 3-5: Flora-Quest, Southern Ohio

Twenty of Ohio’s top botanists and naturalists will converge at Shawnee State Park and Forest to lead a variety of field trips for Flora-Quest during “orchid season.” The keynote speaker, Dr. Joan Maloof of the Old Growth Forest Network, will illuminate why we need undisturbed forests for study and play. Thursday May 16, 2013, 5:30 to 7:30,  "Forest Pharmacy: The Importance of Ohio's Medicinal Plants"  presented by Steven Foster.  Mr. Foster is an authority on herbalism and is the author of more than 40 books.  He is leading the Workshop at the Edge in the days after this talk.  Free Lecture, though space is limited and reservations are required.  For more info visit http://lloydlibrary.org or call 513-721-3707 . May 17-19, 2013 - Advanced Naturalist Workshop at the Edge- Medicinal Plants

 

Saturday June 1, 2013,  9:00 am to 4:00 pm :  Native Tree Workshop  (organized by Earth Connection),  $30.00 Includes lunch 

Presenters:  Dr. Bill Fountain, Extension Professor in Arboriculture & Landscape Management at University of Kentucky; Brian Jorg, Manager of Horticulture, Cincinnati Zoo; Janet Creamer Martin, Naturalist, Indiana Parks. Keystone Flora, (www.keystoneflora.com) Cincinnati’s premier native plant nursery, will have a tree planting demo and offer a variety of native plants for sale. Walk through an Eastern forest with Tim Sisson, President Western Wildlife Corridor.

Trees provide shade, food & shelter for wildlife; add beauty and value to our landscape, help us save on home energy costs and much more. Brian Jorg will have suggestions for “Native Urban Trees”, native trees for city and suburban yards. Janet Creamer Martin, “Woody Plants for Wildlife”, will surprise you with the variety of wildlife dependent for survival on native trees. Bill Fountain will teach us how to “Learn to Listen to Trees when They Talk”, and to identify warning signs of failure. Do join us!
